Bush Track Nugget

Before the folks at the Pomona Fair elected to make their venue nothing more than a continuation of Del Mar we used to cash some good tickets. Monday's sixth race at Yavapai is an example of a "nugget" you can find like the good old days when Fairplex Park(Pomona) was a half-miler. Certain connections simply know how to put one over and that was the case at Yavapai Downs. I called my longtime friend Eddie Burgart at Los Alamitos. Before he took over as the announcer at that Orange County oval we created a publication called Quarter Horse Report. We also spent a lot of time on the bush tracks like the Fresno Fair and those meets out in the desert. The Brnkeroff family showed up with a filly named Gemi Gemini at Yavapai. She showed two works at Dixie Downs and two at CBT. Usually this means a horse has already started not once, but maybe multiple times. Anyway, those races usually do not count. Gemi Gemini, making her debut from the fence, won in game fashion. She didn't pay but 2-1, but it was a "nugget" in the rough if one figures the filly had prior racing experience. That's why I miss the days of the Pomona Fair when the cheaper horses wheeled in for their chance at a good payday. I think of all the disappointments in my horse racing career, turning Pomona into the extension of Del Mar has to hurt the most. As a horseplayer one welcomed the change of pace the county fair horses brought to that small oval. One day in an appaloosa race I think I had a good share of the pool in a race I had done things right in. Those are things you never forget.
