We're on the road. Visited Ruiidoso Downs Friday for the first time in 40 years and the turnout was hugely disappointing. R.D. Hubbard had the place fully staffed(unlike some major meets) but there was no betting fevor. Hubbard says he may be forced to move the melet elsewhere if a Sept., 21 measure is not approved. If the voters approve a gross receipts tax in Lincoln County three-sixteenths of a percent it would give Hubbard a credit roughly of $750,000. I was shocked at the lack of play on Friday, two days prior to the track's biggest day The All American, but noted one graphic reason. I visited the Ruidoso slot machine club and left shaking my head. Most of the machines were one-dollar, something which is simply mind boggling. Business in the racetrack casino is down $58% since 2003. Hubbard might want to replace a majority of those $1 machines with the nickel and quarter machines for starters. You can go not too many furlongs away to several plush Indian casinos. Funny but true. A long time ago we wrote about the dumb move horsemen made when they didn't want to deal with the Indians reservations in California. Look who's in the driver's seat now? It was the single most turning point in SoCal racing.
Here's a couple of opinions for Sunday's races as I continue making my way to my new setting in Pearl River, Louisiana. Twirling Candy should win today's fifth at Del Mar but you don't need me to tell you that. The opening odds-on price is simply not going to enhance your bankroll.
6th Saratoga--Sterling Silver(6) was victim of a horrible trip last time. Sixth early and full of run he was locked in on the rail. He was checked to the 1/2(-1), checked before reaching the top(-1) and checked again midway through the stretch(-2) on August 15. Sterling Silver(6) can graduate the maiden ranks and opens at 3-1.
8th Del Mar--I realize it's a tall order but the value in today's Torrey Pines is Malibu Pier(2) at 5-1. Malibu Pier was lengths best making debut on the lawn. Between foes early Malibu Pier was dropped to rail at the top. Malibu Pier was checked and broke stride to the top(-2), recovered, surged late, and galloped out strongly on July 15th.
