P Val Is Why CHRB Is A Sham

The CHRB(California Horse Racing Board)is a sham. It's an inept group. They have consistently failed to uphold much of anything when it comes to their antiquated rulebook. High priced lawyers continue to exploit CHRB mandates which have needed refining for over 30 years.

When they granted Pat Valenzuela yet another license to ride last July it sickened me. The deal was accomplished behind closed doors. The disgusting decision sent the wrong message to the jocks' room. Obviously proper jockey conduct doesn't matter in California.

Pat Valenzuela has been given more second chances than baseball's Steve Howe and Daryl Strawberry combined. It's a prolfic example of how the "greed breed" has infested a once great California horse racing circuit.

"He deserves to work, make a living and provide for himself and his loved ones," wrote ESPN's Jeremy Plonk last July. "But he has no business in the saddle in California or anywhere else in competitive horse racing." Plonk had it right.

In 1976 we wrote a minority report on California Racing, singling out the CHRB's antiquated rulebook. This organization, and its rules, don't throw fear into anyone. When you have lame duck board member John Harris on the board serving his own selfish interests, you can't expect much when it comes to right or wrong. They play by rules best serving a few greedy owners and breeders. The rest be dammed.

The California Horse Racing Board should be disbanded. For years it has done nothing more than cater to greedy factions who are bleeding the system. Sound familiar? I think so.

Their most recent outrageous back room decision has indirectly taken bread off the table of jockeys who have not laughed at the system.

It serves no purpose to repeat a plethora of unbelievable drug related actions of Pat Valenzuela. Fact! Pat V. should have gone to prison years ago when he hijacked a taxi in Arcadia, California. His lawyer got him off on that one too.

P Val's return has hurt others. Take veteran Paul Atkinson for example. He's played by the rules. He shows up for work every day. More importantly, Atkinson has conducted himself in a professional manner fover a long period of time.

Indirectly the morons comprising the CHRB have compromised a number of jocks plying their trade in the west. Some of the mounts P. Val has been acquiring jerk riding chances away from those who have played by the rules.

Those who claimed they were never going to ride Pat V. again are doing just that. Enter the "greed feed." One exception is leading trainer Mike Mitchell. Over the year's he gave Pat more chances than you can count. Reportedly Mitchell told P. Val not to bother dropping by his shedrow prior to his July return from Louisiana. It's a shame more trainers haven't followed Mike's lead.

How many years ago do you think Pat Valenzuela would have been banned for life is he were riding in Europe? A Euro non-nonsense stance is needed in California.

Mandates are supposed to deter those who break rules or those horsemen who choose to cheat.

It's easy to break rules and take chances in Calfornia when punishment is not a concern.

Unfortunately there is no stance when it comes to the CHRB.

Disband it!

Maybe if Pete Rose would keep betting on Baseball in California he could get in the HOF as well !

You're right, obviously, but P-Val is still a fine rider. Pretty amazing at his age, and after all he's been through. More natural talent than any jock I've ever seen.
