Jaycito, the 2-1 favorite for Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), has a bruised front hoof and is 50-50 to be scratched from the $1 million race, trainer Bob Baffert said Friday, April 8.
Baffert said Zayat Stables Jaycito is battling a bacterial infection that has caused fluid to accumulate in his right foot. The abscess has been an issue for more than a week, but had been confident that it had been under control until the last 24 hours.
Jaycito inherited the role as Santa Anita Derby favorite after Premier Pegasus was scratched with an injury on Thursday. Premier Pegasus and Jaycito finished one-two, respectively, in last months San Felipe (gr. II). Silver Medallion would be favored in the major Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) prep if Jaycito can't go.
Baffert said he will make a decision on Jaycitos status on Saturday morning.
