looking increasingly doubtful that Jaycito will make his scheduled appointment in Saturdays Grade 2, $200,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, in which he would have been one of the top choices.
The Lexington became an option for Jaycito after he missed the Santa Anita Derby on April 9 with a bruised right front foot. However, he has not worked since then. In fact, Jaycito has not worked since April 2, and has not raced since March 12, when he finished a distant second in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in his only start of this year. Jaycito has had only two works since the San Felipe.
KENTUCKY DERBY NEWS: Track all the 3-year-olds on the Triple Crown trail
Jaycito originally had been scheduled to travel to Kentucky on Tuesday, but that has been delayed until at least Thursday. Bob Baffert, his trainer, on Tuesday said he would make the call on Wednesday regarding Jaycitos participation in the Lexington.
However, Baffert already has told Martin Garcia, Jaycitos rider, to be at Hollywood Park on Saturday, rather than Keeneland.
Jaycito currently has $250,000 in graded stakes earnings, which puts him in the field for the May 7 Kentucky Derby. But should Jaycito not make the Derby, that would open another spot on the graded stakes earnings list, and there are several others currently in the top 20 whose status is not solidified, including J Ps Gusto, The Factor, Watch Me Go, and even Uncle Mo.
Because of all that uncertainty, the connections of Anthonys Cross have re-evaluated their position on the Derby. Anthonys Cross had been dropped from Derby consideration after finishing fifth in the Santa Anita Derby. But on Tuesday, his trainer, Eoin Harty, said Anthonys Cross will run in the Derby if he gets in.
I cant eliminate him off one bad race, Harty said. He likes Churchill Downs. If you are ever going to take a shot, this is the year. Hell have two more works for the Derby and be trained accordingly.
Anthonys Cross has $182,000 in graded stakes earnings.
The Derby field is limited to 20 runners. If more than 20 enter, as seems certain this year, the field is determined by earnings in graded stakes races.
The simple answer is Baffert believes he's the best 1 1/4 horse in the race. Horse's like that (ones that will run forever) don't need as heavy as conditioning as those with distance limitations. Still, that's a lot to overcome if he indeed does go in the race with only the one prep.
As crazy as it sounds, he may look at it like entering him in the Derby if he's sound is a free roll, and worse case scenario will serve as his prep for another TC race, and take a spot away from a different contender to his other horse.
The Factor, Jaycito still eyeing Kentucky Derby

tweet5EmailPrintLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)—Bob Baffert says Jaycito and The Factor are still being considered for the Kentucky Derby.
Baffert wrote in a text message on Wednesday to The Associated Press that The Factor will train up to the Derby. A final decision won’t be made until the horse breezes over the dirt under the twin spires.
The Rebel Stakes winner is coming off a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Arkansas Derby.
Baffert added Jaycito, currently 20th on the graded stakes earnings list, will not run in this weekend’s Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.
Jaycito missed the Santa Anita Derby on April 9 because of a bruised foot. Baffert said the Derby on May 7 is still possible even though the horse has just one start this year.
Baffert already has one Derby starter in Midnight Interlude, who edged Comma to the Top by a head to win the Santa Anita Derby on April 9.
The Derby is limited to 20 starters, with preference given to those with the most graded stakes earnings if more than 20 are entered.
The Factor is currently 17th in earnings with $272,500; Jaycito is 19th with $250,000. Midnight Interlude’s $600,000 payday for winning in Santa Anita places him seventh on the graded list.
I will be putting the $1000 into tris but how about this. Baffert no horse in the top 3 and I will sponsor a $100 contest for the preakness. Baffert with horse on the board and Draynay sponsors the $100 contest....

And you don't have a clue. Baffert will probably run three in the Derby, and you'll continue to post. Nobody claims either is the right thing to do.
LOL. Quite a different statement than "he doesn't have a derby horse"
