Keeneland - Race 9
#4 Tu Endie Wei (6/1 ml)
Been following this filly for quite a while, ever since her sparkling debut win up @ Woodbine a few months ago. Half-sister to the excellent stakes runner Biofuel starts for the same trainer (Reade Baker), and was apparently so well-regarded that felt comfortable entering her directly into a stakes for her debut, a 14-horse field (same as today) that she smoked by 5 lengths going away. I later saw a quote from Baker afterward where he said that Tu Endie Wei "ran like he expected her to", so that says a lot, and then she subsequently won again in another stakes race where she surprisingly employed totally different tactics, this time scooting right out to the front before easing back along the rail, letting her pace foe take the lead, and then re-engaging that one from the outside before breezing clear on command (guessing her new tactics had a lot to do with the field size). Won by a diminishing half-length but was clearly not all-out nearing the wire, she has already been flattered as the onrushing second-place horse that day (Northern Passion) returned to win a one-mile stakes that included some well-regarded Saratoga graduates. So now, Tu Endie Wei ships in from Woodbine for the Alcibiades (a race she's been pointed to for quite a while now) in an attempt to gain points for entry into the Breeders Cup (per Reade Baker's comments). Also very much worth noting that her older sister Biofuel (as a 2yo) went on to run huge in the Breeders Cup (and subsequent route stakes as a 3yo), so it seems very likely that Tu Endie Wei will stretch out nicely here. Very talented filly with excellent bloodlines who could very well pose a big threat @ Churchill next month, assuming things go right today. Looks like the real deal here.
HRT record:
84 for 309 (27%)
$697.40 mutuels ($8.30 avg)
