Aqueduct - Race 2
#6 Lumineuse (5/1 ml)
First-time starter for Chris Clement comes off two straight heads-up drills down @ Payson Park with none other than Summer Front, who came out of those drills to run second in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes yesterday. In fact, that was the first race that Summer Front has lost, as he was 3-for-3 (with a couple of stakes wins) heading into that event. Obviously, that bodes extremely well for this filly's chances in this maiden event today. Have to like.
HRT record:
86 for 318 (27%)
$734.00 mutuels ($8.53 avg)

The bad news is that Lumineuse finished a well-beaten third. No dice.
The good news is (also) that Lumineuse finished a well-beaten third. First off, the track was extremely muddy. No idea beforehand how that would affect the outcome, but as it happens, Lumineuse broke very slowly (losing roughly 3-4 lengths right off the bat), then appeared to be spinning her wheels thereafter, never looking real comfortable over the off going. She did manage a somewhat muted rally up the rail into the lane, looking briefly as if she might take second, but she fell short. Better for me, because if she's going to get beat, i want it looking as bad as possible in her Past Performance line the next time she's entered. And therein lies the good news: she finished third, beaten roughly 8-10 lengths, and due to the mucked-up racing surface, the time of the race was exceedingly slow. So the fact that she was beaten 8+ lengths in a very slow race will greatly enhance her odds next time, and i really have no reason to take this race as anything more than an aberration (due to the unfortunate circumstances involved). Defintely worth a look next time out, and incidentally, i wouldn't be shocked to see her entered on turf (she's by the Epsom Derby winner North Light, and her trainer Chris Clement is a noted grass trainer).
In each of her last two drills (both since the race above), Lumineuse has worked heads-up with Miss Valentine, an older stakes-winning filly who is 5-for-12 lifetime (with 4 seconds) and is coming out of those drills to start as the 7/5 ml favorite in a stakes @ Belmont today. Hoping to see that one run well, obviously.
The long-absent Lumineuse has finally returned to the worktab after her apparent injury. Worked 4 furlongs @ Saratoga this past Sunday...
Nothing noteworthy about any of her 4 drills over the last month. The one back on 9/17 came heads-up with 2yo barnmate Mrs. Bean, who came out of that drill to run second for a half-mile (before stopping badly) behind the 20-length winner My Happy Face, who came back to miss by a dirty nose in the Frizette behind the 1/9 favorite Dreaming of Julia.

Never realized she was NY bred. I might bet $50 based on the fact that she'll be a number.
