ARCADIA, Calif. - Nates Mineshaft, who recently was transferred to California and to trainer Richard Mandella, will miss the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile and will be off indefinitely, Mandella said Tuesday.
We found a problem and he needs time off, so we sent him home, said Mandella, who declined to elaborate on the nature of the injury. Well give him a little rest and try to get him back late next year.
Nates Mineshaft won the New Orleans Handicap earlier this year. He has not raced since finishing third in the Stephen Foster in June. He was taken away from trainer Austin Smith after being scratched from the Hawthorne Gold Cup the morning of the race Oct. 6. Smith did not want to run him.

This kid is pretty fucking sharp. He did a great job with this horse, made us lots of money here, and clearly knew something was wrong. It's a shame the ownership group took the horse away - only to have a Hall of Fame trainer tell them the exact same thing.

Nate's Mineshaft last raced in June and spent four weeks after that at the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. He spent his days in air conditioning, and his legs were iced, his ankles were stretched, he would be walked, bathed, get a treadmill and take a nap. There is a personal relationship between the owners and the vet at Missouri. The owners are conscientious, and they put Nate's health first. The scratch from the Gold Cup at Hawthorne last Saturday purportedly resulted from "a disagreement between the owner and trainer on whether or not the horse had enough fitness to run the mile and a quarter"
