Belmont - Race 4
#2 Liatris (3/1 ml)
Real interesting filly here, who despite being listed @ 3/1 is actually the third choice on the morning line, and may well be overlooked here because she's shipping in from Pimlico off a win in a slowish-looking 59 1/5. That's misleading however because an allowance race for older horses later on the card hit the 5-furlong mark in even slower time, and it should be noted that Liatris was only under "mild coaxing" late. It should also be noted that while she won going away by almost 4 lengths, the second-place horse finished another 7 lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Yet another interesting point to note, this filly is owned-and-trained by Jann Anderson, and she represents the ONLY horse he has started all year long. In fact, he had not started a horse (prior to this filly) since way back in 2010. So it appears he's come out of retirement for this filly, who promptly won her very first start (while being awfully live on the board @ 5/2 for a guy who hadn't started a horse in 4 years), and is promptly being shipped into Belmont for a stakes try in her second career start. You think this Anderson guy likes her? It certainly appears that way.
HRT record:
95 for 356 (27%)
$813.10 mutuels ($8.56 avg)
