There is a reason that we don’t assign class figures to 2-yearolds;
as what they’ve done in that first year doesn’t always mean too much
in their soph season. Indeed, four of the last six winners of this race were
exiting Allowance races, while last year’s winner, Wildcat Red, came off a
win in the Hutcheson. Let’s let the trend be our friend and we’ll focus on
lightly-raced Allowance winners Gorgeous Bird and Itsaknockout. Both
are shooting for the hat trick after winning in a one-turn mile here last
month. They earned equal 138 Final Time Ratings, but ‘Knockout stalked
a blistering pace in his Jan 4 win and he drew away late. He may have
more room to improve and lands the HF 15a. He’s from the Pletcher barn
and his #1 rider, Javier Castellano, takes over on Juan and Bina. That
one raced greenly behind Upstart in the Holy Bull, but the rider switch
suggests that better is possible. Upstart is the one to beat after stalking a
moderate pace and drawing away in the Holy Bull. That was his first start
since completing the Trifecta in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. His last win
came at this trip and he’s an obvious threat right back. Bluegrass Singer
does well on paper, but was no match for Upstart Jan 24. He may simply
have bounced after recording back-to-back career tops in his previous
pair. He’s another with price potential. Finally, Frosted gets blinkers for
the first time after checking in 2nd in the Holy Bull and he’s never been
worse than 2nd. He can move forward.

CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance
have been: Danny Boy :30.7 - Upstart :32.1 - Gorgeous Bird :32.5
