Ashleyluvssugar was a comfortable winner in a Grade II marathon March 21. A win at the distance and level makes him an obvious threat, and he was certainly flattered when the runner-up came back to win a Grade I on Derby Day at Churchill. He’s the one to beat and will get the HF 15a. Ganesh improved in his second U.S. start when finishing 2nd in a Grade III at 10 furlongs April 25. He won his last three starts in Argentina at this distance, so he could improve even stretching out to a marathon. Divine Oath won a Grade III at this trip in Florida Dec
27, but has been no better than 4th in three Graded Stakes this year. He is from the Pletcher barn, though, and ran very well the last time he was shipped to So Cal Oct 31. We can’t rule him out. Going Somewhere was a marathoner in Group Stakes in France last year. He could add some intrigue to the heat while being tried in blinkers for his first U.S. start. Crucero looks hopelessly overmatched coming off a loss to Starter Allowance foes, but you can’t blame his connections for running as he’s guaranteed at least a $4,000 check if he just finishes 5th. It goes up to
$12,000 should he happen to beat one of the others.
CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Divine Oath, Ganesh :48.5 – Crucero :49.3
