The Thug

The thug is a popular icon in our culture. Women get wet, men quiver and the thug basques in his Criminal Providence.

The Thug at DelMar is Peter Miller, who trains many of his horses at San Luis Rey Downs--a mere Harley ride from the track. It's his moment to shine, to the best of his shineability. You'll see il Tutti Capo standing at the top of the tile staircase in his dark suit (even on a hot day) with his soul patch and beady eyes, looking for his next skein to slice. You might hear him brag about how he ripped off the public (Brad Free: Miller rode this first-timer all the way to the bank | Daily Racing Form) but, conversely, how he's just a poor little guy who can't compete with the likes of the Mega Trainers like Baffert, Sadler, etc. He's a Man of the People, don't you know, just like Hollywood Joe Harper and burg of Del Mar itself.

The Thug appreciates the return to dirt since, as an "up or out" conditioner, he trains his horses fast and he trains them hard. So be warned: Dear Mr. Miller will be ready to win. That's how he gets noticed, how he gets owners in a dying sport to turn to the dark side for a last spin at the Ferris Wheel.

But do also watch when the Thug hits his punk glass ceiling. As of last year, he was less than 5% in the big races, Know Your Trainers - Peter Miller vs. John Sadler | Getting Out Of The Gate. But since his true purpose is not to win but to put himself on the map as a major player, a participator in all that is Golden in a lead sport, The Thug is never discouraged.
