Trainers do all they can to keep a horse in top form, but many times changes are needed to try to get them there. Not all changes are seen from a physical standpoint, but we can see some on paper.

Look at Wind Warning above. He has finished 6th in two starts vs. NY-bred straight Maidens at the 120 RCL. Today, he drops in class to the 100 RCL and his trainer hits at a 22.8% win percentage with runners moving DOWN in class. Also, ‘Warning will also have the BLINKERS ON today and that is a very strong move for his trainer at 30.2%. Both changes could help this runner move forward especially as the trainer has had plenty of past success with both moves.

These kinds of changes can be seen in young horses especially Maiden races as trainers are trying to find their best distance, best surface, equipment changes, jockey changes and maybe even pace tactics to help a horse perform at their best.

Trainers all have their strengths and some are better than others with certain changes. When you see a horse that hasn’t shown a lot in their recent starts, look for some kind of change to help the horse run better especially when that trainer has had plenty of past success as seen in the Digest Trainer Stats.
