Saratoga - Race 7

#7 Cumberland River (6/1)

This 2yo Godolphin firster from the McLaughlin barn is actually a 1/2 brother to the sensational Baffert colt Congaree (from waaay back in the day). Seems strange that McLaughlin chooses to debut him going two turns on grass here, but that said, it's very hard to argue with McLaughlin's placement of this colt considering that he's hitting with an outrageous 31% of horses debuting at a mile or greater (and of course, Congaree himself broke his maiden around two turns, though it was in his second start, and he was a 3yo when he did it).

Aside from the breeding angle, Cumberland River has recently worked heads-up with 2yo barnmate Sallisaw, who emerged from that drill to win first time out a couple of weeks ago (though sprinting), and most recently with the older multiple winner Robillard, whose most recent win (two starts back) came going this same distance on grass in an allowance race @ Belmont (wire-to-wire). Also note the presence of Joel Rosario, with whom McLaughlin is hitting a robust 33% over the last couple of years.

Looks pretty live here at a nice price.

I'm hearing the #2 for Chad is super live today, but I'm backing the TAP #9 with his second start off a troubled trip.

Chad Brown still holding on to Saratoga lead, TP has really gone cold.. have not seen him go cold like this... TP sending lots of runners last few days, but not hitting at 30% clip.
