ANALYSIS: Awesome Encounter beat his 17/1 odds when rallying to be 3rd of 10 debuting with $50,000 Cal-breds Aug 9, a race common to a few of these. He rallied past 2/1 second choice Counterplay and has a right to improve with recency even though his trainer’s mark with second-timer is bad. Counterplay has shown improved speed with the addition of blinkers and is likely quick enough to again get position from the inside. Inside speed has played better as the meeting has worn on and he has Lone ‘F’ potential if the field remains as drawn. Peter Miller (Yes Master) and Bob Hess (Sunny Truce) have rookies signed up. ‘Master may get more action, but arguably shows too many works to be all that well meant. ‘Truce is not bred to win early, but his slow drills are a positive and he gets the barn’s #1 rider while ‘Master gets Puglisi, who doesn’t ride that many for Miller. Dominic’s Way debuts for Richard Baltas, but brings a lengthy work tab into this and is bred to route. Still, he can’t be counted out. There are some distinct possibilities on the also-eligible list. Dani’s Ring is a comebacking second-timer with multiple 5F gate works. He may be well meant. Unbridled Rocket has speed and will have outside position on Counterplay if a starter. His number slipped last out, but he’s finished in-the-money with similar in both starts at the meeting and is a contender, while Knight of Drama improved in start #2 and can improve again. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Awesome Encounter :17.8 – Sorcerer’s Wildcat :18.3 – Tribal Roar :18.4

Counterplay is shown setting the pace, but he didn’t show a lot of stick as his last fraction was 19.7. He still holds on for 3rd in the charting, though, and maybe he can find more stick today. Unbridled Rocket lays up close and finishes better to finish 2nd in the charting. He could be a solid threat. Awesome Encounter rallies strongly in 17.8 to win the paper race in 1.5 lengths slower than par time for the level. He certainly merits consideration.
