Del Mar - Race 7
#9 Irish Freedom (7/2 ml)
Baffert firster by Pioneerof the Nile (American Pharoah, American Cleopatra, et al) comes into this race after outworking barnmate Diva La Mousse on Aug 6th. DLM came out of that drill to show big speed yesterday, leading to the top of the stretch thru fast fractions before tiring to fourth. If Irish Freedom is indeed better than that one, he should run well here.
Del Mar - Race 8
#6 Kentuckian (5/2 ml)
Talented Hollendorfer trainee came off a year-long layoff to be entered in a very tough spot last month (a 5-furlong speedball dash on turf), popped the gate well and showed speed to challenge three-wide but then took a bad step and drooped back quickly before recovering to move up again, then ran into more problems and simply got eased. Has come back to train exceptionally well since then (with Mike Smith aboard for several drills, indicating they mean business this time), and switches back to to the same main track that he's been training so well on. Should run well here.
