Welcome back to Southerncalracing.com it is July 23rd and we are starting the second week of live racing from Del Mar and today is also opening day at Saratoga Race Course where the main track is listed as sloppy and they are off the turf.We here at Soutehrncalracing.com were looking forward to playing a couple of the turf races at Saratoga, but we will have to wait for another day. This is one plus about playing the racing circuit in Southern California is that we don't have to worry about the main track anymore (as long as Santa Anita has fixed the problem they had last winter) do to the synthetic surfaces and we are generally going to have a firm turf course.
Today's card at Del Mar consists of 4 maiden races, two entry level allowance races one of which is on the turf, a mile claimer on the turf and the feature, which is the Graduation Stakes for two year olds bred in California to be run at 51/2 furlongs over the main track. We will focus our plays on sixth and the seventh races on today's card.
Race 6 - #1 Bright Moon (12-1)This four year filly has yet to win here in the U.S., but she has been a victim off the slow early paces she has been running into. We are looking for faster pace today and she will be able to save all the ground breaking from the rail. Not only will she be saving ground, which is always key in turf racing, but she also has shown a great closer kick being able to run the last fraction in anywhere from 23.2 to 22.4, the fastest came in her most recent race. The last fraction is the most important in turf racing. She seems to be rounding into form and look for jockey Jose Valdivia to save all the ground today and make the last run and get Bright Moon into the winner's circle for the first time in the U.S.
Betting Strategy Bright Moon to WIN and Exacta Key - 1/ 2, 5 and 2,5/1 Daily Double Bright Moon to Triumphant Flight Race 7 - #2 Triumphant Flight (4-1) This two year colt won at first asking for trainer Eric Kruljak, which is atypical for horses trained by Kruljac. He also won from the rail, which is very difficult for first time starters and not to mention the fact that he is bred to be a bit of runner. What I am trying to say is that this colt is showing signs of real ability and maybe just to good for this field today. He has not missed a beat since the last race as he has had 4 straight regularly spaced 5 furlong works, which looks good on paper. As far as the human connections go at this meeting trainer Eric Kruljac is 2 for 2 and both of those winners were ridden by today's jockey Victor Espinoza, who also was aboard for him first time out when he broke his maiden.
There is no way we get 4-1 on this colt, but we should get 2-1 and that is fair to us here at Southerncalracing.com.
