Welcome back to Southerncalracing.com it is July 24th and today's feature at Del Mar is an allowance/claiming race made up of 10 older horses who are mainly coming out of grade or restricted stakes company. The lukewarm morning line favorite is Arson Squad at 7/2, who has not raced since January. As of right now the main track at Saratoga is listed as sloppy and they are still off the turf so we will be just watching races from Saratoga once again.
Yesterday's selections failed to produce as Bright Moon was sent off at 21-1 and found a ton of trouble. First, she had to avoid jockey Jose Campos who fell off No Ka Oi and secondly she found no room to run up the rail following the eventual winner Brendolyn, jockey Jose Valdivia tried to come off the rail, but encountered two horses and was repeatedly checked and by this time she had lost any chance. This was a roughly run race and there are plenty of horses who had troubled trips in this race. We did catch a break when Triumphant Flight was sent off at 8/5 and did not qualify as a win wager since we stated we needed 2-1 or higher in order to wager on him. He ran solid race, but was unable to hold off Babs Mossa who got up in the final strides.
The track seemed to play fair as we saw two horses go gate to wire on the card yesterday. The times seemed to be a slower as most of the 4 furlong splits for the sprint races were any where from :46 and change to :47 and change. These were mainly two year old horses running yesterday so let's see how fast they go in today's feature when we see a group of good older horses sprint on the main track today. As far as human connections go Peter Miller and Martin Pedroza teamed up for another winner yesterday they have multiple winners dating back to the end of Hollywood Park. They maybe a combo o keep an eye as Pedroza is a solid aggressive rider who offers value at the windows and always tries hard on every mount he rides. He may not be the prettiest on a horse, but he gets the done. While trainer Peter Miller is turning in another terrific meeting at Del Mar for the second consecutive year.
Today's Selections :
Race 6 - #6 California Flag (6-1) He is the speed of the field and will be out winging early. He was gelded before his last and returned running easily defeating a field Cal Bred alw/n1x going 6 furlongs at Hollywood Park. He broke his maiden going two turns so the added distance should be of no concern. He has reportedly worked well in the interim and look for jockey Joe Talamo to put him on the lead and run them off there feet today.
Race 7 - #8 Doppio (5-1) He is dropping out of back to back graded stakes races and he is the last horse to defeat Street Boss who is the best sprinter on the west coast as of right now. He is fresh, he is 2 for 2 at today's distance of 61/2 furlongs on the main track and his trainer Carla Gaines is do for some luck to come her way. Her horses fired, but they settled for minor at the Hollywood Park meeting and Del Mar has started off much the same way for her. Doppio has the ability to run the final fraction going 61/2 in 28.2 seconds, which is a full second faster than any other horse in this field has done at this today's distance on the dirt. So look for Doppio to be flying home late under jockey Rafael Bejarano.
