Welcome back to Southerncalracing.com it is July 25 and the feature race at Del Mar is the Wickerr Handicap for 3 year olds and up to be contested at one mile over the turf course. Today at Del Mar there will also be a Pick 6 carryover of $115k, which will include races 3-8. The Pick 6 sequence looks tough and we should see a big payout. For those interested in Saratoga the main track as of now is listed as fast and turf course as soft.We here at Southerncalracing.com will wait until the turf course is listed as firm before we get involved in the racing at Saratoga.
Yesterday we went one 1 for 2 with our selections. California Flag was burned up in a pace duel setting fractions :21 and change, :44 and change and 1:09 change. This obviously set it up for the closers as Swift Winds came from off the pace under jockey David Flores to capture the 6th race. As for our other selection Doppio he scored in late running fashion paying $10.20 on the win end. We were a little worried when we did not see Northern Soldier out on or near the lead, but that did not matter as Doppio flew late under jockey Rafael Bejarano. We stated yesterday that Doppio came home a full second faster than anyone in this race at 6 1/2 on the dirt and he proved us right on.
At this point in the Del Mar meeting we are 4 of 14 with our selections. Those four winners have returned a combined $44.20, based on $2 wager. Our percentage may not be as high as we would like to see it, but average return per winner is doing well at $10.05.As for how the main track played we saw one horse go gate to wire, while the other races were won from off the pace by horses making the last run in the lane. The final times may have been a little slower than you would like to see, but the interior fractions still remained on the slow side.
Today's Selections :
Race 4 - #5 Milestan (8-1) This 4 year old filly is making her second start stateside, while making her first start over the turf here in the U.S. She showed a touch of speed wile sprinting over the main track at Hollywood Park in a small 4 horse field, which produced two next out winners. She is trained by terrific turf trainer Neil Drysdale and ridden by Brice Blanc, who gets his fair share of wins on the turf. This filly looks meant well as she comes in with a series of long/slow works over the turf for Drysdale.
Race 7 - #1 Porto Santo (5-1) This 5 year old horse has not run since last year at Del Mar, but is working quite well on paper and according to clocker reports. Julio Canani is quite capable of getting a horse ready off this type of layoff and he enlists the services of jockey Garret Gomez. Gomez is a wonderful finisher and he should fit this horse perfectly. As long One Union goes with Lang Field there should be enough speed in here to set up his late kick of :22 flat going a mile on the turf.
