Wait a While tests positive for procaine
Dec 5, 7:35 pm EST
Buzz up! PrintSACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP)—Wait a While, third-place finisher in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 24, has tested positive for excessive levels of procaine, a local anesthetic.
The California Horse Racing Board made the announcement Friday, saying that a hearing would be held Dec. 14 before Hollywood Park stewards to consider disqualification of the 5-year-old mare and forfeiture of $213,000, her share of the purse.
A hearing has not been scheduled for Todd Pletcher, who trains Wait a While for Florida-based owner Arindel Farms. Pletcher could receive a 30-day fine for the infraction, discovered during testing by the Maddy Laboratory at UC Davis.
Procaine is found in procaine penicillin G, a commonly administered antibiotic for horses.
Wait a While, champion 3-year-old filly of 2006, won the $400,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes as the even-money favorite four weeks before the Breeders’ Cup. She has earned nearly $2.4 million in her career.
