TWO TABLES PLEASE
Go Rachel Go......!
Let me know when you are ready to mail my hat !
Rags to Riches won the Oaks, and then won the Belmont over the eventual Horse of the Year. I'm not saying Rachel isn't better, she probably is, but she hasn't accomplished more to this point than Rags to Riches.
And Rachel hasn't come close to accomplishing what Zarkava did only last year. Let Rachel Alexandra crush older males in the Arc, and then we'll talk.
Rags never won another race after Belmont and was not undefeated
Zarkava didn't win a Triple Crown race or beat the boys
She has proven herself the best amongst the fillies and the colts and is undefeated and a few wins away from a perfect 3 year old season.
Bring on Well Armed.
First off, i'm not talking about how Rags to Riches finished the year. I'm talking about what the two fillies had accomplished at this particular point (although the Belmont actually hasn't been run yet, but you get my point).
Rachel is not undefeated either. Undefeated as a 3yo? Sure, that's true. I believe that Rags to Riches was undefeated as a 3yo as of her Belmont win, but that's just going by memory. She might've lost once early in the year, i'd have to look it up.
Zarkava didn't win a Triple Crown race because she was a European grass horse. Duh.
And Zarkava DID beat males; she destroyed them in the Arc de Triomphe to close out an undefeated season. If you had been reading this site last fall, you would know that. Do a search; i think i even posted a video of the race here.
As for Rachel's potential undefeated season, who knows what Asmussern has planned for her after the Triple Crown races? He's barely had time to think about it yet. But even if she faces her own sex in the Breeders Cup, she would likely have to beat Zenyatta and/or Life is Sweet, perhaps even Cocoa Beach (no idea where she's at right now). Any one of those mares are tougher than the horses she beat today.
Look ... Jackson and I are going after Well Armed in the Breeders Cup. If those other fillies are all that tell to come swim in the deep end.
RA just took apart the field from the 13 post !!!! When was the last time ANY horse won from the 13 in the Preakness ???

Lets come right back with our Derby pick here. I respect Rachel Alexandra very much, but at the small price she'll go off at, there are a few issues she'll have to deal with. Big Drama will gun to the lead from the rail, and Rachel may have to be used just a bit from the outside post in order to gain a good stalking position, particularly with Take the Points right to her inside. Nothing major, and i'm sure she'll get a good spot, but she figures to be using more early energy this time around due to that, and also the fractions that Big Drama figures to set thru the first 6 furlongs to a mile. Not really a good thing when stretching out to her longest career distance, especially on the class-jump when she'll have horses like POTN, Papa Clem, and Friesan Fire biding their time right behind her. The other factor is the barn change, as she's no doubt been taken out of her usual routine. What effect that might have, i'm not sure, but she really only has one way to go, and that's down. Great filly, as we all know, but at 8/5 or so i think it's worth trying to beat her. As for POTN, as i mentioned it appears he'll be sitting in a good spot, behind a pace that figures to be pretty fast for the distance. He was moving beautifully around the turn in the Derby, looking every bit the winner until about midstretch when he seemed to falter just a bit. Unbelievably (considering it was the Kentucky Derby), i had read a quote from Baffert a few days before the race saying he hadn't cranked POTN up all the way because he wanted to save something for the Preakness and Belmont (apparently he felt he had a shot at the Triple Crown). So there's a chance that POTN might be more likely to move forward here than some of the others, and of course the Preakness is a sixteenth shorter than the Derby, so that figures to be to his benefit as well, if the Derby distance was just a touch to far for him (as it appeared). Last i heard, POTN was somewhere around 7/1 in the early wagering, and with money continuing to pour in on Rachel Alexandra throughout the day, it looks a safe bet that that we should get at least 4/1 here, perhaps even a few notches higher depending on how much money the Derby winner takes. Speaking of which, the latest weather report i saw is showing a 60% chance of rain in the last two hours heading into the Preakness, so there's a legit chance the track could be sloppy here. POTN didn't see to have any trouble with the muddy surface in the Derby, so that's fine, but obviously Mine That Bird would have to be given extra consideration on a wet track, particularly with a strong pace to run at.
A birthday gift in 1957 to McKnight by his employees, Aspidistra cost a reputed $6,500. Aspidistra was risked in claiming races. No one claimed her and at the time she retired, McKnight still owned her. Two years prior to the birth of Ta Wee, the mare had given birth to Dr. Fager. Aside from Dr. Fager and Ta Wee, Aspidistra is the tail-female ancestress of Unbridled.
Ta Wee's training was assumed by the Hall of Famer, Scotty Schulhofer. Her introduction to racing at the age of two proved a modest success, but in her first year as a three-year-old sprinter, she won eight stakes races, five of them consecutively. In the Vosburgh Stakes she beat older males.
Because of her triumphs in her third year, her fourth year saw her heavily weighted. Even so, she won five of her seven races. In her last two races, her second Fall Highweight Handicap and her second Interborough Handicap, she ran under 140 and 142 pounds, giving away 19 pounds to the runner up in the Fall Highweight and 29 pounds in the Interborough. For this she won her second consecutive American Champion Sprint Horse award.
Retired to broodmare duties, Ta Wee had six foals, five of them winners, and four stakes winners. Her first foal was the sprint stakes winner, Great Above, who sired Holy Bull.
The name Ta Wee comes from the Sioux language and means "Beautiful Girl." Ta Wee died in 19
