Del Mar - Race 1
#2 North Rodeo (5/2 ml)
Filly showed a god bit of talent in her debut, flashing good late kick to run second behind Spring Awakening, who will likely go favored in today's Del Mar Debutante off that race. She was a clear second choice to the huge favorite Comical Vacatoin last time out (that one is also a big threat in the Debutante), a race which also included the the 9/2 ml favorite here Runforthemoneybaby. That one outfinished North Rodeo for second last time, but North Rodeo had flipped over in the paddock before the race and was very likely operating at less than full capacity. Even so, she did the dirty work up front vs. Comical Vacation and held on reasonably well, only beaten a length for second. She also had every right to get discouraged and throw in the towel after Comical Vacation ran away from her; that probably contributed to her dropping back. Runforthemoneybaby comes out of a nice drill here with Comical Vacation, and is obviously a big threat, but i think the value will lie with North Rodeo due to the missing information in the Racing Form. People wil simply see that Runforthemoneybaby finished in front of her last time, and will expect it to happen again. Particularly when that one came running late, and the distance increases to a mile here.
Del Mar - Race 4
#3 Heatseeker (2/1 ml)
This one made an eye-catching move to take the lead approaching the turn in a tough stakes race while going two-turns on the polytrack during a time when NOBODY was winning on the lead in route races. Clearly relishes the surface, and can win here on the slight turnback in distance on a surface that's playing much more fair these days. If anyone beats him it'll probably be the 7/2 shot Visa Parade; the 9/5 favirite Buzzard's Bay doesn't look like much of a threat. Nice exacta possibility, btw.
Del Mar - Race 7
#7 Raise the River (5/1 ml)
Maiden ran very well last time out despite some trouble, and continues to train sharply. Should move foreward here in his second start over the surface, and looms a threat vs. winners.
Del Mar - Race 9
#7 Sweet August Moon (15/1 ml)
Well-regarded first-time starter for Koriner is dropped straight into the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante for her debut. Good grief. Obviously he thinks the world of her, and she's been training exceptionally well (as you might imagine). Sure took Koriner a long time to unveil this one, but i was reading an artricle about her from the March OBS (where she worked a quarter in 21.3 before bringing $400,000; Koriner signed the ticket himself), and Koriner said then he was going to take it real slow with her and let here develop. Something about her being a rather massive individual. He's probably been looking at longer race for her all along, and of course she gets 7 furlongs here. Unbelievably tough spot to make her to make her debut, but here's the value guys. The known commodities will be bet accordingly; this one won't.
Del Mar - Race 10
#9 Sir Lowry (5/2 ml)
Frankel colt made what looked like a winning move leaving the turn last time, only to get mowed down by the super-impressive Patch of Blue. Continues to train well, and should clearly improve with the race under his belt. Obvious choice.
