"Win and You're In" (as long as you pay us $160,000)

LAHALEEB is to miss the Breeders' Cup meeting after connections learned an entry fee of $160,000 is payable despite the automatic berth she gained by winning the Grade 1 EP Taylor Stakes in Canada on Saturday.

The EP Taylor is part of the Cup's ‘win and you're in' programme which removes the winner from the selection process for the Breeders' Cup, in Lahaleeb's case the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita in 17 days' time.

However, to take advantage of the automatic berth, Lahaleeb would already need to be nominated to the Breeders' Cup programme, as many horses are as foals. The daughter of Redback is not Breeders' Cup nominated.

As a consequence, owners Mohammed Al-Qatamiand Khalid Al-Mudhaf will be obliged to pay $160,000, a cost which trainer Mick Channon said had ended any hopes of a run.

Channon said: "The Breeders' Cup have a win and you're in policy which applies to the race in Canada but that's not accurate as in fact it costs $100,000 to add her to the Breeders' Cup scheme and another $60,000 to put her into the Filly & Mare Turf.

"In that sense ‘win and you're in' is a bit misleading."

Channon was already concerned about the turf at Santa Anita being too lively for Lahaleeb.

Last year's race was run on firm ground.

With SantaAnita ruled out, Channon now wants to head the other way around the world.

"Lahaleeb is in the sales at Tattersalls," said Channon, "but personally I am very keen for her to run in the Hong Kong Cup."
