SEA THE STARS on Tuesday night won what is likely to be the first of anumber of prestigious awards when he was named Horse of the Year at the 2009 Cartier Racing Awards.
Christopher Tsui's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner was the outstanding contender for Cartier's ultimate prize, following his retirement at the end of a career that yielded six Group 1s.
Cartier's coronation of Sea The Stars, regarded by many as one of the greatest colts of all time, took place in front of 300 invited guests at a star-studded ceremony at Claridge's Hotel, the winners of which were determined by results in Pattern races, the verdicts of an expert panel and the votes of readers of the Racing Post and Daily Telegraph.
Unsurprisingly, Sea The Stars was also named three-year-old colt of the year, while his trainer John Oxx won the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit.
In one of the night's most hotly-contested categories, French-trained filly Goldikova, who landed her second Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita, beat off competition from the likes of King George and dual Breeders' Cup Turf winner Conduit to win the older horse award.
Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle stable may have been thwarted by Sea The Stars for much of the season, but some consolation came in the shape of Racing Post Trophy hero St Nicholas Abbey and Yeats winning the two-year-old colt and stayers' awards respectively. Yeats's achievement also means he is the only horse to win a Cartier Award four times.
Fleeting Spirit, whose sole success this year came in the July Cup, gained some compensation for her below-par Breeders' Cup Sprintdisplay by earning champion sprinter honours.
Dual Oaks-winner Sariska was named champion-three-year-old filly, while Cheveley Park Stakes winner Special Duty was victorious in the two-year-old filly category.
